Schalke 04: 20 most expensive transfers in Schalke 04 history
By Josh Sippie
14. Rabbi Matondo—$9.9m
The hype train on Rabbi Matondo is high enough considering he came from Manchester City. The main reason he never got into the outfit there was just that Matondo never got his opportunity. He came to Schalke to get that opportunity on Januar 30th of 2019, locking into a four and a half year deal.
More from Release The Knappen
- Schalke 04: Arkadiusz Milik would take everything, but he’s worth it
- Schalke 04: Ozan Kabak makes Jean-Claire Todibo pass quietly
- Schalke 04: Omar Mascarell the only boost between now and then
- Schalke 04: David Wagner just has to make it to the end of the season
- Schalke 04: At least we still have Weston McKennie
Matondo is a big investment for Schalke, as they don’t usually spend this kind of money, let alone on a teenager. Most of their youth is pumped out of Knappenschmiede, but Matondo was brought in for a decent fee that saw his hype train piled full of passengers.
In his first calendar year at the club, fans saw a lot of what made them excited in the first place—tremendous speed, incredibly quick feet, and a lot of infiltration. But his big shortcoming was his final product. He couldn’t put the finishing touches on attacking moves, whether that be creating a big chance or scoring the goal himself.
Matondo still has a ton of time to prove himself and get sorted in the Schalke outfit, but with every week that passes with him still struggling, the pressure will mount.
At No. 13, we have someone who flies under the radar.
