Schalke 04: 20 most expensive transfers in Schalke 04 history
By Josh Sippie
16. Benjamin Stambouli—$8.8m
By now, if you don’t know what kind of names are coming up on this list, you may be thinking that I’m crazy in my assertion that Schalke doesn’t spend their money well. Here we have another guy who was well worth the money invested in him. Benjamin Stambouli, the centerback, and defensive midfield combo who has provided so much solidity at the back.
Stambouli arrived from PSG and immediately became the utility defender for the Royal Blues, playing defensive midfield, centerback, and rightback as well, and playing them all pretty successfully.
He began this season as the No. 2 centerback to Salif Sane, where he likely would have remained had he not suffered a season-ending injury.
The big question as of writing this is whether or not he will become yet another Schalke man to walk for free at the end of his contract. He is out of his current deal when this season ends and, if nothing is done about it, it will be another case of money gone to waste.
On to No. 15.
