10. Kevin-Prince Boateng—$11m

Schalke 04 is not a club that does well with egos. Not by a long shot. They’re too grassroots, too down to earth, too humble in origin to pair well with superstar syndrome, and that’s what Kevin-Prince Boateng brought to the club along with his $11m pricetag.

The attacking midfielder was a creative showboat, and it’s hard to put the emphasis on one or the other because he personified both so well and so evenly. He’d been bounced around to so many clubs and would bounce around to so many clubs following that it should have been quite clear what kind of player he was.

Boateng ended up scoring six goals in 46 appearances for Schalke before his contract was terminated in December 2015 following disciplinary actions that Boateng and two teammates faced in May of that same calendar year.

He quickly rejoined Milan for free and Schalke missed out on recouping any of his value. Though they were undoubtedly just happy to be rid of him.
