It wasn’t that long ago that Weston McKennie said that his style of play reflects the city that Schalke calls home, and nothing could be more apt. Nowhere in the world of football will you see a team and city more synonymous with each other. Schalke and Gelsenkirchen are two peas in a pod.
Gelsenkirchen is a coal-mining town built on hard work and determination and Schalke is a club built on the exact same principles. When you watch this team play—pick any era—you will see these tenants bleeding through with each and every tackle. They are gritty, they are fierce, they are competitors through and through.
Incredibly, that has carried on throughout the decades into the present day, as reflected by McKennie making the note that he fits in so well in this city because the city and the club haven’t lost an ounce of that hard-working mentality, despite all the transformations modern football has gone through.
