8. Humble roots

There’s a lot of satisfaction to be found in a club that was founded with humble roots. The modern game has been infiltrated by some big-time money. Not that that’s a bad thing, but there’s a certain stigma against big money teams as a result, with many of them being likened to the Galactic Empire and smaller, grassroots clubs like Schalke serving as the Rebel Alliance, to stick with the Star Wars analogy.

That isn’t going to change. Schalke will always be the Rebel Alliance to the Empires out there. It’s a part of who they are as a club. They come from humble roots as an old mining town, they have a foundation built on those roots, and no one is going to uproot that. It just goes too deep.

Unless you’re one of those people that cheer on Emperor Palpatine while he seeks to subdue the peaceful planets and establish a ruthless intergalactic empire, then Schalke is the team for you.
