4. Markus Schubert

Markus Schubert has his work cut out for him. Since Alexander Nubel is no longer in the picture, the mantle falls to Markus Schubert and Markus Schubert alone. He is our keeper going forward, no question about it, and that means it’s time for him to step up.

He already mostly has. With minor slip-ups, he has looked every bit up to the challenge of being the No. 1 keeper and with such a clear path ahead of him, with Ralf Fahrmann waiting, he will make it obvious really quickly if he’s ready to be what we need him to be or if he still needs some time.

Against Bayern Munich, it looked like he still needed time. He made some incredible saves, but he made some incredible mistakes too. But he’s recovered since then. He’s settled well, he’s proven to be a competent and capable keeper, and that needs to continue on in the Revierderby. We can’t have any mistakes. Anywhere. And that means in goal too. Nothing rattles team confidence like a keeper mistake. We need safe hands and if Schubert provides it, we have one less thing to think about.

Moving on to No. 3.
