Schalke: 3 young players who must step up as Bundesliga restarts
By Josh Sippie
2. Nassim Boujellab
Yes, I have been on a Nassim Boujellab fix lately. I always get hyped when Schalke promotes a young guy and I get even more hyped when a highly intelligent manager like David Wagner starts to try more and more to get him involved. You know what means? It means that Wagner likes what he sees from Boujellab and wants to see that translate onto the pitch.
My guess is that Boujellab’s creativity from the reserves is exactly what this team needs. Having a rotating stable of midfielders like Alessandro Schopf, Mascarell, McKennie, and Serdar, the goal thrust all comes down to one guy—Serdar.
That’s not a lot of stability and reliability, especially because Serdar isn’t perfect either. He’s struggled this year. And when he struggles, we need other answers. Hence guys like Mercan and this guy right here, Nassim Boujellab.
Boujellab has logged the most minutes of any of the youth options, but that doesn’t mean he is the guy who needs to step up the most. That is reserved for No. 1.
