2. Ahmed Kutucu
What’s scary about Ahmed Kutucu‘s contract situation is that we have yet to see what he can really do. We keep getting little nibbles of his ability, but seeing as how he has yet to start a Bundesliga fixture, we can’t know for sure what he can be counted on to deliver.
More from Release The Knappen
- Schalke 04: Arkadiusz Milik would take everything, but he’s worth it
- Schalke 04: Ozan Kabak makes Jean-Claire Todibo pass quietly
- Schalke 04: Omar Mascarell the only boost between now and then
- Schalke 04: David Wagner just has to make it to the end of the season
- Schalke 04: At least we still have Weston McKennie
That’s the so-so news. The good news is, his contract, like most of the people on this list, is good through 2022. While this is normally a decision point for most players, and while I would urge Schalke to take whatever risk there is in extending Kutucu and just do it, we do still have the rest of this year and next year to figure things out before we get into the final year of his deal.
The thing that worries me is that Kutucu is going to be wanted by all the big clubs out there and he’s talked about his dreams of playing elsewhere. By that standard, more important than getting him a new contract is getting him a prolonged stint in the starting XI.
Again, we know that he’s talented, we know that we want to keep him, so it’s never too early to start thinking about getting him locked in. If not just to protect his value in the future.
