Schalke: Suat Serdar and 5 other players who need new contracts
By Josh Sippie
Schalke can start making a lot of headway into consistent relevance by getting Suat Serdar and these 5 other players new contracts.
I can’t go more than a couple of weeks without talking about Schalke‘s need to get more crucial players tied down to new contracts. It’s been such a bugaboo for this club in the past, and Amine Harit‘s new deal was such a big deal, that all I want now is more.
All the talk these days is centered on one man—Suat Serdar. The German midfielder is a high-profile target of a lot of European outfits, including a handful in the Premier League, but with Schalke needing to build around a core of reliable players, it’s never been more important to keep hold of not just Serdar, but more.
It’s never too early, either. Think of Weston McKennie, he didn’t really need a new deal, but hey, it’s mutual affection, so might as well lock him in for as long as both sides could possibly want.
With that in mind, let’s talk about all the guys who could use a new contract right this moment. We will star with the man of the hour, Suat Serdar.
6. Suat Serdar
With the first rumors of Schalke exploring a new contract with Suat Serdar, the battle has begun. The nerves have begun. This is something that Die Knappen so desperately need and something that would piggyback on the sensation of Harit’s extension perfectly. Not least of all when coupled with Alexander Nubel ditching.
Serdar’s deal runs out in 2022, which gives him another two years, but this is the crucial time to get him locked in. Once you start getting into that last year scenario, things can go awry pretty quickly.
Serdar, as it stands, is probably the most important player at this club. Not least of all because he keeps getting better. This year has been explosive for him. Not only is he scoring goals, but he’s showcasing supreme ball-carrying abilities as well as the defensive work rate that you need from central midfielders.
Serdar needs a deal and I’m just tickled that Schalke is already entering into the arena to get that deal done.
On to the next guy.
