FC Schalke 04 didn’t make any deadline day acquisitions after acquiring Jean-Clair Todibo and Michael Gregoritsch on loan, but they did nearly sign a promising prospect from France.

Michael Gregoritsch and Jean-Clair Todibo are two incredibly talented young players who can help FC Schalke 04 make a push to return to Champions League football in the Rückrunde of the 2019-2020 season. But the Royal Blues always have an eye on the future, so they’ve been monitoring prospects who can help the club contend for Champions League places beyond 2020.

Iron Gomis is one player who has caught their interest.

According to a report from L’Equipe, the Royal Blues are among “several German clubs” with interest in the 20-year-old midfielder.

Gomis currently plays for USL Dunkerque in the Championnat National, which is basically the third tier in the French football system. But Gomis is on loan at Dunkerque from Amiens SC, who are currently in Ligue 1.

Per L’Equipe, Schalke tried to sign Gomis before the January transfer window closed. While the club fell short in their efforts to sign the Ligue 1 prospect, the report mentions they could make another attempt in the summer.

Presumably, they’d be successful. Gomis is the type of player who could easily make a jump to a top Bundesliga club, and his contract reportedly expires upon the conclusion of the 2020-2021 season. Thus, Amiens SC could cash in on Gomis with one year left on his contract. Furthermore, Amiens are at risk of being relegated to Ligue 2 – they are in 18th place in Ligue 1 – and that could make it easier for Schalke to make a move for Gomis.

Going from the third tier to the first tier would be a huge jump for Gomis, so if a deal were to be completed in the summer, Schalke would have to ease Gomis into things. But with the way they’ve developed players over the years, the left midfielder could find his footing under the excellent David Wagner.

Schalke reportedly ran out of time before completing a deal, otherwise it seems like a move would have happened. Keep a close eye on news of Gomis’ development, since he could very well be a member of Wagner’s squad in 2020-2021.
