DM Omar Mascarell

A rock. In his first game with the armband, Omar Mascarell played like a perfect captain in front of the home supporters, bossing the midfield and neutralizing Gladbach’s threat on the counter. Marco Rose’s side could not find the lock in the defense, as Mascarell kept his teammates organized. And whenever Schalke needed to get out of a sticky situation, Mascarell provided the steady nerves, dribbling, and passing vision to get them out.

Rating: 8.0 out of 10

LM Alessandro Schopf

There are few wingers in the Bundesliga who work as hard as Alessandro Schopf. Though he was primarily responsible for playing on the left side of Schalke’s formation, he often created overlaps with Daniel Caligiuri and Jonjoe Kenny on the right side to throw off Gladbach and exploit the opposition’s weakest areas. Schopf’s influenced on the game waned offensively, but he carved out some dangerous first-half opportunities. He also had a team-high five tackles, which is sensational for an attacking player.

Rating: 7.5 out of 10

RM Daniel Caligiuri

That’s more like it. Daniel Caligiuri can consider himself unlucky not to have an assist, and he did have a great shot on goal blocked by star center back Matthias Ginter’s back. Regardless, Caligiuri provided some sharp low crosses to his teammates in the box and worked as hard as ever defensively. The 32-year-old had a combined four tackles and interceptions with four clearances. He also had three key passes, two dribbles completed, and three fouls drawn. Now that’s an all-action performance.

CAM Suat Serdar

Usually a box-to-box midfielder, Suat Serdar played a more attacking role with Amine Harit injured and unsurprisingly flourished. Serdar’s technical quality never ceases to amaze me, as his strike for the first goal of the match featured some wonderful curve. Defensively, Serdar worked hard again, shaking off an early knock to finish with a combined four tackles and interceptions. The Germany international’s class on the ball is astounding, as the defense simply could not take the ball off of him.
