We’re back! I thought it would never get here, but alas, time has marched on and we find ourselves ready to get back into Bundesliga action as FC Schalke kick off the return against second place Borussia Monchengladbach.

Die Knappen are taking no prisoners this January transfer window. Perhaps in preparation for this very match-up, they’ve added Michael Gregoritsch to the midfield crop and they’ve only just added Jean-Clair Todibo as well. Both guys bring tremendous excitement to Gelsenkirchen and I cannot wait to see them in action.

Whether we will or not will be answered in due time, but for now, let’s talk about the match.

Obviously we still have some injury problems. Salif Sane and Benjamin Stambouli are for sure out. So is Weston McKennie, though at least he won’t be gone for the rest of the year like the other guys.

Other than that, players should be returning to health thanks to the winter break, and with the right opening shot, the Royal Blues could find themselves in excellent position to begin their assault on a Champions League place again. As they play the first match of the return, they can set the tone for the weekend and, if they take all three points, put themselves just two points back from Monchengladbach.

So yeah, there’s a lot to focus on here.

David Wagner will be grateful for the new faces he has, and for the winter break for allowing at least Gregoritsch to get acclimated (and score his first goal). For this one, I’m expecting a 4-3-3- formation. Let’s dig into the predicted XI with the keeper.

Keeper

As Alexander Nubel is still serving his suspension for attempted manslaughter, Markus Schubert is going to take over here, hopefully for the long haul. I have no patience for guys who abandon Schalke like Nubel is going to do and Schubert chose this club over alternatives like Arsenal, so give it to the guy who wants to be here. Easy decision.

On to the defense.
