1. Omar Mascarell

You just can’t do any better. Just about as soon as Alexander Nubel announced that he was leaving, the reports hit the news that Omar Mascarell was lined up as the next captain. It was just a rumor, but it had the feel of a move that David Wagner would have already made, if not for the want of convincing Alexander Nubel to stay.

Mascarell is the literal backbone of this club. Every single match you see, watch Mascarell. He is integral to our success. He is so, so good at mopping up attacks before they can get to our defense, but his true brilliance lies in his ability to take that ball and start a counter attack going the other way.

He’s a dominant presence, not afraid of anyone, and he’s willing to impose the rule of law on anyone who dares come into his zone.

That hardness, that elite mentality, is the kind of player you want to lead your club forward in a new era designed to get an historic club back to the top where they belong. He’s young enough, he’s experienced enough, he has the perfect mentality.
