2. Amine Harit

Yeah, signing that new contract was a big deal. It was the first time in ages that a truly elite Schalke player tied himself down to the club for the long haul. He was being scouted by Barcelona and Liverpool, the pinnacle of the footballing world, but he believed in Schalke enough to commit himself to the club.

That says something about a guy. Something Alexander Nubel will never be able to say for himself.

Harit cares about this club, he’s young enough to be the captain for a long time, but he’s talented enough to be a prolific captain, among the best creative players in the world. That is a delectable combination of a lot of the things that make a great captain.

The only drawback for him is that he’s a bit more soft-spoken. You can’t undervalue how important it is to have a captain who doesn’t mind riling up his teammates, and that doesn’t strike me as a Harit specialty. He’s more the Mesut Ozil type. let him do his thing and you’ll benefit.

Of course, Ozil became a captain too, so who knows.

He’s a great candidate. His dedication to the club is unquestionable and his talent level is on par with the kind of player we want to start keeping hold of. But there’s one guy better.
