FC Schalke 04 needed a late winner from Suat Serdar, but they were able to prevail against Union Berlin at the Veltins Arena on Matchday 13.

Depending on how the rest of the weekend’s Bundesliga results go, FC Schalke 04 could finish Matchday 13 in one of the league’s top four spots. David Wagner’s mission in 2019-2020 is clearly to bring Die Knappen back to the Champions League, and while the result could have easily went the other way, Schalke were able to defeat Union Berlin 2-1 on Friday to pick up all three points.

Every game is vital in this tight Bundesliga title race, and Schalke do have a fighting chance at winning it all this season, even if they are underdogs compared to clubs like Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig. Thanks to their depth in defense superstar goalkeeper, tough midfield, and the wonderful Amine Harit, the Royal Blues have what it takes to go far.

Here are five things we learned from their narrow victory over upstarts Union.

1. Kabak is a unique teenage defender

Most 19-year-old defenders don’t have the ability to read the game quite like Ozan Kabak, who put together his fourth sensational performance since starting at the center back position for Schalke. He made a decisive goal-saving tackle in the second half, provided constant cover for Jonjoe Kenny at right back, and led the team with a whopping five interceptions against an Union Berlin side that was game to attack.

Per WhoScored.com, Kabak also had two key passes and completed nearly 85% of his passes. He was difficult to beat in the air with six duels won.

Kabak’s passing should not be overlooked when discussing his importance to Schalke. At the age of 19, Kabak is influencing the build-up play and creating chances like a world-class center back, while recording interceptions at a rate that would put bigger names like Mats Hummels to shame.

Schalke can consider themselves blessed to have purchased him this summer at such a small fee.
