CB Ozan Kabak

Schalke center back Ozan Kabak has been one of the steals of the summer. Kabak chose the Royal Blues over interest from clubs like AC Milan and Arsenal, and after it took some time for him to get an opportunity in the starting lineup, he’s flourished since Benjamin Stambouli and Salif Sane suffered serious injuries.

Kabak has world-class potential, and he turned in his strongest performance yet last week in the 2-1 win over Werder Bremen. And in his two previous Bundesliga starts, he scored against Augsburg and Fortuna.

While it’s unlikely Kabak scores against Union Berlin, his defensive work will be crucial in quieting the away side’s top threats – Ujah and Andersson. Expect to see another stalwart performance from Kabak, whose positioning and long balls continue to improve every game.

AM Daniel Caligiuri

A wide player capable of starting on either flank, Daniel Caligiuri is often a difference-maker for FC Schalke 04, especially when he’s on set pieces. Caligiuri created two goals against Augsburg in a 3-2 win and also scored a technically satisfying goal of his own against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Matchday 11.

Caligiuri will need to be positive at both ends of the pitch against Union Berlin, as workrate is the name of the game against a team with as much industry, togetherness, and desire as Union. As a veteran leader for Die Knappen, Caligiuri will need to help set the tone for the home side against a team eager to pick up a second straight upset victory.

Bundesliga fans will be watching this match on Friday evening, and Caligiuri has the opportunity to step up in big moments when he’s hovering over the ball for a free kick. Look for him to have a moment of sublime quality that helps decide the match in Schalke’s favor.
