DM Omar Mascarell

The unsung hero for FC Schalke, Omar Mascarell is in the discussion as one of the world’s best holding midfielders, even if he doesn’t carry the same name recognition as many of the others. Mascarell is a monster defensively and a master-passer who rarely makes errors. He is the beating heart of Schalke’s world-class midfield, consistently finding the open pass while always staying disciplined defensively.

Mascarell’s hard work on defense allows Suat Serdar to make forays into the attack, and his commitment also enables the likes of Amine Harit to feel more confident and aggressive in their pressing.

It may not always show, but Mascarell is critical to David Wagner’s highly successful tactical scheme at the Veltins Arena. He averages two tackles per game and a whopping 2.5 interceptions per game, as few midfielders are as adept as reading the game as Mascarell, who also completes over 86% of his passes.

CAM Amine Harit

No list like this could be complete without Amine Harit, who is the pride of Schalke. Harit has more than recovered his form and looks exactly like the future superstar Schalke fans predicted him to be. The Morocco international comes up big in the clutch, providing several game-winners this season, including a delicious outside-the-boot longshot in the dying minutes to beat Mainz in October.

Whenever Schalke need a big play, Harit is sure to provide it. He is one of the Bundesliga’s leading goal-scorers and the league’s most exciting dribbler. Harit is impossible to stop with the ball at his feet, and he works so hard to pressure defenses. The 22-year-old often drops deeper into midfield to pick up the ball and direct attacks, seeking to help Schalke create chances whenever possible.

Harit is on the shortlist of the best players in the Bundesliga, and he is in the discussion for being the best attacking midfielder in all of European football right now. Schalke fans can feel blessed to have a player of his quality, and we are thankful for everything he brings to the table. It is a privilege to be able to watch Harit’s magic on a weekly basis.
