FC Schalke 04 looked poised to pick up all three points at the Veltins-Arena against local rivals Fortuna Dusseldorf, but the Royal Blues were undone by a hat trick from Rouwen Hennings.

The Royal Blues will rue dropping points at home to Fortuna Dusseldorf, especially since they were able to score three goals. Usually, it’s been the goals that have been hard to come by for FC Schalke 04, but they have now scored three goals in back-to-back games. The problem for Die Knappen has been avoiding surrendering dangerous chances in transition.

On some level, Schalke could do nothing about the three goals they allowed to Fortuna on Matchday 11. The first goal came from an unlucky handball by “center back” Weston McKennie.

The second and third were from counterattacks, with the third being a ridiculous goal in which Fortuna center back – and former Schalke prospect – Kaan Ayhan looked like prime James Rodriguez in setting up Rouwen Hennings’ hat trick. Perhaps Suat Serdar could have been less sloppy on the second with his giveaway, but Fortuna looked awesome on that counter, too.

Sometimes you have to tip your cap off to the opposition. With that in mind, here are three things we learned from Schalke’s 3-3 draw with Fortuna.
