Well, here we are again. Another Revierderby, where anything could happen and no one would be surprised. FC Schalke have so many memorable outings in the last couple of years alone. There was the truly bizarre 4-4 comeback draw that felt like winning a war. There was the 4-2 win last time out, with Dortmund seeing themselves out of the match.

No matter what state FC Schalke are in, they will always, always show up for the Revierderby. Look no further than the 4-2 win referenced.

Which is what makes this one all the more exciting. Because while we were completely out of the running last year, we still played Dortmund like our lives were on the line. This time around, a win at the Veltins will see Die Knappen swapping places and jumping ahead of Dortmund where, I think we can agree, this club truly belong.

But nothing happens without some key performances. The club can be as sturdy and confident as they want, but individual match-ups can and will determine the fate of this match, as with any other match.

And so, without further ado, let’s talk about the five key players that can help see this match to a successful conclusion.

We start with No. 5.

5. Salif Sane

I don’t know if I have ever in my life doubted the abilities of Salif Sane. Which is amazing, because he was more or less Naldo’s replacement, and I absolutely love(d) Naldo.

Sane is just about the same. Which is why it was so jilting to see him, and the entirety of this FC Schalke backline, undone by the introduction of Ihlas Bebou last week, who I really wish I could stop talking about (but the nightmares won’t stop).

Sane will be faced with similar attacking threats against Dortmund. Better attacking threats, if you ask me (which you did). So yeah, the big man is pretty important. Just like he always is. And just like always (Bebou not withstanding), I have faith that he’ll uphold his end of the bargain.

Moving on to No. 4.
